Messy flowers

I used Conte Pastel Pencils for the first time and it was a messy business. I am wondering how other people can get their pastel drawings look so neat (no smears)? I am guessing that they may work on large papers, or they sharpen their pencil very often.

Added 29/01: If you happen to know the technique on how to use pastels or pastel pencils, could you please share it with me? I really appreciate it! Thanks!

  2. Looks good! I agree, though — those pastel pencils can be much messier than would be supposed.
