Some sketches from the last few days. Gotta work hard, no time to play/blog. I experimented with a brush pen, which gave me an excuse to draw fast and simple. It’s incredible how a sketch can take less than 5 minutes only because it is done with a brush pen. This pen forced me to leave details out and stick to the primary items. My hand & arm do react different and handle the pen different. I’ll experiment more with it.

I went home late and while waiting for the train, I decided to do this one above.

Sketches below are result of experiment in drawing people. Kinda like it. One has a caricature feel to it, although unintended. These are drawn based on photos. They are well known here.

This last one is obviously my cat.

  1. I like the way you sketched with the brush pen. Supra.

  2. What kind of brush pen are you doing that gives you this charcoal feeling to these great sketches? I just returned from a trip to the tropics–all my sketches were with Tombo brush pens in a range of colors. I loved sketching with them, but they have a kindergarten look to them. These sketches of yours are wonderful.

  3. I like the way this brush pen handles. I’ve never used one before… now I should go buy one to play with in the studio. They look “in the moment”… very nice!

  4. Thank you everyone!
Kamuelacarol: I used Pentel color brush GFL in black. It’s with disposable cartridge, which you can squeeze to get more ink flow. Hope this helps!

  6. Eefje, I am totally enjoying your recent sketches. Your style is loose, energetic, playful. Really has a lot of character. I also use a brush pen and love the way you can get varying line weights by squeezing the cartridge as you described. Makes for a more spontaneous sketch than a standard ink pen would.

Also wanted to say I really like your sketches of people, the passengers you observe and it’s fine that some turn out like “caricatures” as you call them - that’s what gives your drawings a unique voice, your voice. I’m glad you don’t try to sketch like everyone else does - I love your sketches just the way they are.
