To London

Happy Holidays everyone! A belated Merry Christmas to those celebrating.

I was very busy at work and at home in the last couple of weeks. Luckily the pressure is over and I hope to spend more time doing some sketches. At work I was busy with…what else? Work, of course. It’s the end of the year and everything needs to be done before everybody is on holiday. Typical. At home, I was busy preparing what to cook for Xmas. We had to do big time grocery shopping and cooking. I even bought some stuffs at the Albert Cuyp Markt in Amsterdam, which I can’t find at the local market near where we live.

Now the sketch below doesn’t really have anything to do with the holiday season. It is the only sketch I made in the last 2 weeks. I had to go to London on 15/12 (afternoon) on business. I flew back the next morning and it was such ashame that I didn’t have any time to sketch anything else. My stay was really short, less than 24 hours. Everything was done in a rush. I think the most enjoyable moment during my trip was when I had a full English Breakfast at the hotel the morning I flew back. That was just so… comforting and satisfying.

I made above sketch during the flight to London Heathrow from Schiphol with British Midland. I started before the boats and harbour (somewhere at the edge of England) were visible, and finished somehow with them on view. The wing of the airplane is too small in comparison to the size of the window.

  1. I love English breakfast, yummm… I’m sure beans and eggs would’ve looked ‘’lekker'’ in sketch :)

  3. Thanks elif and helena.
Elif: yes, you’re right there. En het was heel erg lekker. Only, it would cool down while I was busy sketching. And that would be bad….So it took me not time to make a decision. Chow down directly and took a second round LOL :)

  4. Another fine sketch. I almost tried the same view on my trip to Albuquerque in November. I really like the way you add watercolor wash to your sketches. It always looks perfect. My attempts always seem to come out blotchy. What is your secret?

  5. You are able to capture such an everyday image with such class. :) Very nice.

  6. Oh I love this. Great compostion. Sometimes it’s nice to be a captive audience because it really makes you slow down and focus on the details. I have an 11+ hr flight to Hawaii coming up in 2 weeks and I need to pick a subject for the flight. I’ll remember this one.

hey, my friends are trying to talk me and the hubby into a trip to Amsterdam in the Spring. Feel like sketchcrawling?

  7. Thank you Zeke, Kathleen Marie, and Amanda.
Zeke: for this sketch, I actually used watersoluble pencils (Graphitint). Uhm, I don’t know if I have a secret on using watercolor/watersoluble pencils. I only try to watch the amount of water on the brush. Less first than add more.
Amanda: I’d love to meet you and do a sketchcrawl. Let me know when your plan is definitive.

  8. Very nice sketch. I wish I could draw. My wife is convincing me to take a drawing class for fun. I am considering it!
